Ser vs. Estar

Ser vs. Estar — Permanente vs. Temporário

💡

Key Concept

English uses 'To Be' for everything. Portuguese splits 'To Be' into two completely different verbs based on time. Ser is for permanence (the essence); Estar is for temporary states (the current condition).

Cantonese Speaker Tip

最難唄部分! 廣東話將「係」一個字搞定,但葡文分兩個:

Ser = 永久/本質的「係」——「我葡萄牙人」(Sou português)
Estar = 臨時/狀態的「係」——「我而家度很累」(Estou cansado)

記住:如果唄野唔會變(國籍、職業、性格)用 ser, 會變唄(心情、健康、位置)用 estar

Ser defines WHAT something IS — identity, origin, profession, physical traits, character. Estar describes HOW something IS right now — mood, health, location of movable objects. The same adjective can be used with both verbs, changing the meaning entirely.

Key Phrase — Try saying it!

Ela é faladora, mas hoje está calada.

Estar — To be (temporary)

I am (state)
You are (informal, state)
/ / He/She is / You are (formal, state)
We are (state)
/ / They/You (pl.) are (state)
