Asking Questions

💡

Key Concept

To extract information, use specific question words. Each question word pairs naturally with a verb from Lesson 3. Portuguese does not use auxiliary verbs like 'do/does' — word order and intonation form questions.

Cantonese Speaker Tip

詞序不同! 廣東話問句疊疑問詞擺在原位:「你住在邊度?」 葡文啊疑問詞擺在句頭:“Onde moras?”

對應:onde = 邊度, quem = 邊個, qual = 邊個/邊樣, quanto = 幾多, como = 點樣, porquê = 點解。

Each question word serves a specific function and typically pairs with a particular verb. In spoken Portuguese, you can also form yes/no questions simply by using rising intonation at the end of a statement.

She always gets up very early and starts working every day at 8 o'clock. The office is far from the train station and she always takes the metro so she doesn't arrive late.
