The 5 Key Verbs

Os 5 Verbos Essenciais

💡

Key Concept

In English, you use 'to be' for everything (I am John, I am American, I am 20). Portuguese splits this into distinct verbs: chamar-se for names, ser for permanent traits, estar for temporary states, ter for possession/age, and regular -ar verbs for routines.

Cantonese Speaker Tip

動詞變位! 廣東話動詞完全唔變:我係、你係、佢係—全部用「係」。 葡萄牙文就唔同:eu sou, tu és, ele é。每個人稱都有不同形式!

廣東話對應:chamar-se = 叫, ser = 係, estar = 喺/係, ter = 有, morar = 住。 記住呢五個動詞,就可以做自我介紹!

Each of the five verbs has a specific domain. Chamar-se is reflexive (you 'call yourself' a name). Ser defines permanent characteristics. Estar describes temporary states. Ter expresses possession (you 'have' years, not 'are' years old). Morar represents the regular -ar verb pattern used for routines.

Logic A: The Mirror (Chamar-se)

You do not 'be' a name — you call yourself. Chamar-se is a reflexive verb where the pronoun (me, te, se) changes based on who is speaking.

Logic B: The Definition (Ser)

Used for permanent characteristics: nationality, profession, identity, origin, personality, time. Ser defines what something IS.
