Counting in Portuguese

Números

💡

Key Concept

Portuguese numbers have unique forms for 0–19 and systematic rules for compound numbers. Hundreds are gendered (200+ changes based on masculine/feminine). Understanding numbers is essential for expressing age, time, prices, and quantities.

Cantonese Speaker Tip

葡文數字同廣東話一樣用十進制,但無「萬」呢個單位。 葡文講 dez mil(十千),唔係「一萬」。

注意! 數字 1 和 2 有陰陽性!um 男 / uma 女(一),dois 男 / duas 女(兩)。 廣東話「一」和「兩」唔分男女,呢度要特別留意!

Numbers 0–10 and 11–19 must be memorized individually. From 20 onward, compound numbers are formed by connecting the tens digit with the units digit using 'e' (and). Hundreds above 100 are gendered: duzentos (masc.) vs duzentas (fem.).
